MPC Character Design

We are one of the world’s leading character design studios. Over a decade of R&D has gone into our creative tools to create first class photo-real animals and creatures. In-house proprietary tools, such as leading fur software 'Furtility' are recognised as the most advanced in the industry.

Over the years we’ve created photo-real penguins, platypus, mice, cats, elephants and tigers; as well as concepted and created weird and wonderful creatures including a fire-breathing lava monster, flying t-shirts and a world of woodland creatures.

Either casting a digital double or developing the character from scratch, MPC’s teams undergo an intensive research process for each creature they create, studying the animals in zoos and their skeleton and muscles systems in museums and through research.

Modelling the basic geometry and texturing the surface creates a realistic look for the skin and acts as a starting point in terms of the size and cast of our creature. Building an entire skeleton and internal muscle system inside the model, perfectly replicating the anatomy of the beast in 3D, allows us to mimic the natural motion of the real creature. The underlying rig allows the skin to have natural movement, including accurate skin folds when in motion. Our leading animators use their extensive knowledge of human and animal behavior to ensure the creature moves and acts in a completely believable way. Many of the subtleties and nuances they incorporate are imperceptible to the human eye.

Our character design and production work can be seen in our huge range of industry-leading commercials. Watch our showreel and some of our ‘behind the scenes’ films by clicking on the thumbnails at the top of this page.
